It’s been quite a year. Hard الى imagine after ال previous few, just what 2022 had في store لـ us. مع war, inflation, CeFi pretending الى be DeFi market mayhem, ال Scooby Doo unmasking من an SBF + GG & ال gang regulatory-friendly fraud implosion, continuing economic aftershocks من everything this bizarro world version من ال roaring 20’s has brought الى ال forefront so far… It’s a wonder anyone has ال stamina left الى go through a full list.
Didn’t quite count على mass de-platforming, or general سوشيال account reset لـ all users not named Elon, happening في ال blink من an eye because من ال petulant whims من a sad tyrant exposed as far more ordinary, و less brilliant, or even less clever و entertaining, than we once would have guessed.
Have you used سوشيال media at any point في ال past 20 years? Then you too can have all من ال work you have put في building a following, sharing messages و content مع friends, or saving your memories من ال internet في public, wiped out before you can say Masto…

Somehow, there’s a bigger story still happening this year في parallel. Stable Diffusion و ChatGPT close out our list somewhere between endlessly curious inspiration و total obsession لـ anyone that’s put في some good faith time الى try ال جديد ذكاء اصطناعي as ever evolving ابداعي assistant و hallucinatory autocomplete لـ everything.
Where ابداعي ذكاء اصطناعي و ال جديد سوشيال web come together is more interesting still. But HODL some more, if you have it في you. We will take a deep look at ال upside في Part 2 و 3 من this series.
Bare metal assessment من ال present mindscape first: Can we spot a common ثريد running through ال civilizational shocks, highlighted by sudden spikes في demand لـ decentralized سوشيال media و ابداعي ذكاء اصطناعي?
It’s obvious when we pause الى listen الى ال noise لـ a bit. Yes, listen… الى ال noise. There is a consistent hint we can hear في everything من ال unreliability من Amazon deliveries الى ال tragedy من YouTube comment sections. It’s what we’re exhausted by, what we can loosely call “noise”, that seems الى be growing و spreading across every channel من our lives, more than ever. It seems that way, because it is.
Look a bit closer, و what you find is a pattern في many varieties من Denial من Service attacks. Some emerge على their own. Some are intentional attempts by one faction or another في ال open adversarial marketplace من ال global net. Most are predictable symptoms من a system never built الى handle ال interests من users, modern methods و rates من use, or pretty much anything which ال pipes that carry ال signals we casually call ال Web have crammed through them. Web 2.0 wasn’t built الى handle all this.
No other way about it. ال signals we send الى each other و rely على لـ everything, are decaying. They are declining both في signal quality و delivery reliability. ال ability لـ anyone الى launch Denial من Service attacks, intentionally, or as side effects من long forgotten بوست-rationalizations و/or completely unrelated activity, has become so much less expensive than ال practice من creating good material, that ال entire pipework is overwhelmed. We can’t trust ال messages we send will reach where they are meant الى go. We can’t trust what we receive. We can’t even trust that anything we save — message, money, memory, or otherwise — will be waiting لـ us when we return لـ it.
Beyond ال standard list, including ال flood من network resources مع false packets or bot activity, we find it helpful الى think من Sybil attacks, سوشيال media platform cartels, و even copyright when used as a tool الى suppress or punish ابداعي activity, as matching ال classic patterns من what makes Denial من Service attacks so damaging الى open networks, و so difficult الى resolve.
At their core, free transit و exchange من messages, money, goods, materials, people, و ideas, can’t exist without ال free expression من creativity. It is our creativity that builds على ال ideas و works that have come before us. It reimagines existing concepts. Refines, remixes, و repurposes them, في ways that may be entirely mundane, or accidentally brilliant, just as often as they might be جديد و interesting.
It is because ابداعي works can be so transformative و powerful that attacks against free transmission — clogging pathways لـ exchange و access الى markets — are so destructive. ال anti-ذكاء اصطناعي art trend من some ديجيتال era commercial artists, و clickbait happy journalists, fearful that there will not be a better model coming الى replace ال old copyright regime, is one من ال most effective DoS attacks currently contributing الى ال chaotic diminishment من signal quality و deliverability.
ال cartel-like behavior من centralized سوشيال platforms is more obvious و direct. What started مع disbelief that large enough numbers من people would ever be interested في sharing pictures من what they had لـ lunch, their latest takes على entirely common experiences, و personal details من all kinds — لـ free!! they said — grew الى eat ال entire world. First as “software”. Then as FAANG. User Generated Content became ال web itself. و ال center pivot every life على Earth spun around. That we could predict it would end badly was easy. Coming up مع a workable, better, و truly user owned replacement model has taken ال better part من two decades من incredibly hard work. We are barely starting الى see ال fruits من it today.
Maybe that’s ال great thing about 2022. Until this year showed us everything it had الى share, it was still a plausible strategy الى continue putting off لـ later any serious work على old systems that we knew would need replacement eventually. Not a good strategy. But an understandable one.
After everything we’ve seen this year, ال bottom’s fallen out من that approach. It’s now worse than counting على SBF لـ a bailout.
