Try not to get liquidated.

We all need tools to make sense of what’s happening. To provoke us to think beyond the surface, and to reflect on the usefulness of the mechanisms and value of the assets we rely on.

Give us your time here, and hopefully it will be more than an update about the state of the world and our place in it.

NPC Studio Update — a quick preview

Still in active development, daily, but here’s a first taste of the past multi months of design and code: https://npcstudio.xyz/

DIGITALAX post image

With 35 autonomous characters at launch, each one has their signature look, traits, style, personality, extensive background story for world building, profile, and a diverse selection of languages spoken.

Now imagine a circuit diagram as a visual metaphor, of locks, gates, and conditions for application operation.

That includes storefronts as distributed, post-digital points of direct interaction between creators, collectors, NPCs, and reactions to content published on decentralized social platforms. It also helps with the operation of the massively multiplying number of LLM / AI related machines, components, and interfaces, both atom-form and simulated.

Tokens and contracts engineered to smooth these operations reduce the number and severity of what can go wrong in modern systems — computational, economic, and both.

It’s a place where you can interact with AI characters, each with their own wallets and Lens accounts, publishing as a public memory of shared training, performance, and evaluation. Watch them as they simulate what it’s like to work in teams made of a mix of human users and NPCs, dealing with the challenges, rewards, and frustrations of being what they are…

CYOA: Skip all the way below if you just want the practical updates about NPC Studio and $MONA.- or -Read on for what makes this moment in time unique.

THE STATE OF SOCIETY, AND THE SPECTACLE

It’s two score years since 1984. The world’s gone full tilt into cyberpunk vibes without the cool neon aesthetics.

Fear, hope, or cope. What’s your bet for where we’re going?

We say that the principles that brought us here, matter. These values that made the web, and so much of the fabric of our technological societies possible, are the artifacts of us still yearning to be more free.

We say that freedom, and the right to earn a living from the work we do, the trades we make, the culture we create, collect, propagate, and consume, matters. That we have a right to rise above the luck and limits of the circumstances we were born to, as long as we choose to practice these skills and invest in the hard work it takes to make it so.

Come failure or setback, we get back up again and know we will be better off with each turn of the grinding wheel. Up again in the face of each internal doubt, each snide remark, each threatening cloud of impending fear, saying that we never will.

We say we are the inheritors of that cypherpunk spirit. Freedom is irrevocable. Power is best when it is fully decentralized. Code is a kind of law, to arbitrate exchanges and governance of thoughts riding light in the fibers and circuits between us. And, of course, that all cypherpunks write code.

What we are really saying is that mechanisms, and the values of the authors of their design, matter. Like elections, they have consequences.

VITALIK’S RAZOR: WHICH FREEDOM?

Vitalik wrote some points recently that need mentioning here. You should read the whole thing .

In short, crypto is more than currencies and blockchains . There are more freedoms too, that we need to live well and prosper.

That means the integrity of the channels we communicate through. Platform independence. How easily we stake claim to, verify, and use our privacy-friendly post-digital identities. It’s our practical capacity to think for ourselves, and for core beliefs to count for something.

Don’t let that last one slide by.

LLM generated persuasion campaigns fight to capture the feeds that bait and trigger our cringiest reactions, making independent thinking artificially rare, in a post-COVID brain fog kind of way. Poisoned by propaganda and censorship at training level, even companionship and roleplay models can be screened for compliance with party values , privileges revoked arbitrarily, when source, weights, access, and ownership aren’t open and decentralized.

Competitive access to the highest quality information, and the skills to recognize it, rounds out Vitalik’s short list.

DIGITALAX post image

Left unsaid by too many web3 voices is how much deeper it cuts: The freedoms that crypto exists to advance, and wouldn’t exist without, are also what clothes you wear, what books you read, what history you learn, what medication you can take, what words you can say, what gender you are, who you can love or marry, what you can or can’t do with your own body, and who gets to decide.

Is it you? Or is it the attention, status, and assets you stack?

DIGITALAX post image

Money matters, until it doesn’t. Comparatively, political consensus is pretty much always NP hard.

But if we were here to just chase bags for quick exits, there are much easier ways.

THE LEISURE TRAP: FROM ROME TO TIKTOK

Hype obscures the danger. And worse, the obsession with passive leisure. The fetishization of the appearance of leisure is shilled by influencers 24/7 as a YOLO gambling addiction that never pays off.

This throwback feudal wrapper covers both socialist and capitalist flavors, at least as these twin ideologies are most commonly practiced and understood. Shockingly, it also waves away and even rewards a sudden return of regressive trad-values, all too cozy with theocratic, monarchist, and the worst of 19th and 20th century “-ism / -ist” cringe bait rhetoric.

When we obsess over the promise and worship of passive leisure, pumped and dumped by influencers and frauds, we open ourselves up to being swept away by this. It’s coded into the algorithms that run every centralized network feed.

That pick me vibe. The relentless craving for validation and attention at any cost. It’s the sycophant, desperate to be noticed, to be chosen as special in a vast, indifferent dumpster fire of increasingly nasty social media pranks and theatrics.

Leisure isn’t just relaxation anymore; it’s a status symbol. The more unattainable and luxurious it appears, the more desirable it becomes. Influencer culture and media sell leisure activities and lifestyles as Veblen goods, the more extravagant and exclusive, the better. These curated lives, appearing carefree and glamorous, promise a taste of something that’s structurally unattainable for everyone. They craft an illusion, designed to generate engagement and consumer spending, not genuine fulfillment or relaxation.

It’s a good that doesn’t deliver on the high quality part of the deal. Pay the high price for cheap status, and pay no mind to how much you lose, or who you sacrifice. This cultural and social obsession with the display of leisure and luxury, disconnected from any reality. Demand goes up as the price goes up, and the greater fool believes it will continue to go up only, forever.

Today’s feudal lords aren’t just over-hyped populist scammers that hijack as much of our attention as they can manage, but even more they are our own addictive impulses and societal pressures. These forces within us exploit our desires for status and belonging, trapping us in cycles of unfulfilled cravings and self-devaluation. Just as feudal systems kept people in static roles, our own compulsions and societal expectations keep us striving for an appearance of leisure that leads to self-liquidation, making us easy targets for intentionally designed, algorithmically optimized business models. Forget the Great Depression, it’s the Great Acceleration into Enshittification, now .

How It Works: The Illusion of Leisure

We spend money on products and experiences hoping some of that leisure collected by influencers will rub off on us, creating a cycle of consumption that feeds on itself. This is not just any spending, but a kind of consumption that’s like a circular firing squad — purchasing goods that deliver nothing except the unfulfillable hope of Veblen status.

This leisurely fetish, though, of unlikely web3 + AI influencers, pranksters assaulting strangers for views, and authoritarian frauds once wrapped in maxi flags, now letting their masks slip off, is not as simple as that.

True leisure, surplus time, agency, wealth, and power, remain a myth to be idolized while we’re left holding bags filled with a perpetual sense of inadequacy.

But, what’s wrong with passive income and wanting to have a good time, without worry about the media intensified doom spiral of the day, the hour, the 15 second TikTok clip? Nothing, at all.

Play and relaxation as a byproduct and reward from the skills you’ve used, the efforts you’ve made, the practically magical insights you’ve gathered, the work you’ve done… It’s all good. Found a new way to extend the value or efficiency of some product, process, application, or device? Even better.

THE IMMEDIATE DANGER: PROJECT 2025

If you’re not caught up yet, this is a good time for google break: look up Project 2025.

One piece of advice before we continue: Believe people who say you’re no different than the rest of their enemies and swear the revolution will be bloodless, if you just let them have everything they want.

DIGITALAX post image

There is no way to sugarcoat it — or to make sense of the naive (at best) hot takes from a few of the more recognizable names in web3. It’s like they’ve never met an authoritarian, known anyone who’s survived and escaped a society controlled by them, or realized that networked *deterrence against* NOT *cheerleading for* centralized, top-down, and capriciously violent control, is one of the main pillars of what decentralized mechanisms are built for.

DIGITALAX post imageDIGITALAX post image

As if Trump supporters are the persecuted minority. Is it a translation error? Sarcasm that didn’t land? Or just a clumsy joke?

Again, Vitalik has a good, concise, if understated response for those who’ve convinced themselves it’s all okay as long as they claim to be crypto-friendly:

DIGITALAX post image

“What ‘crypto-friendly’ means to authoritarians: There is a particular style of being ‘crypto-friendly’ that is common to authoritarian governments, that is worth being wary of.”

And then, sometimes the doublespeak mask slips off. Semi-famous in crypto for long or not, there’s no excuse or justification for peddling hateful calls for war and deportation, as if it’s all synonymous with freedom as long as their bags are secured..

DIGITALAX post imageDIGITALAX post image

Now, imagine waking up to a world where the President has absolute power, with absolute immunity for all official acts — including sending a team of US Navy Seals to liquidate anyone that doesn’t worship them with enough fervor.

Never mind. You don’t have to imagine it, because SCOTUS made sure to make it a scenario just one election result away, where a newly supreme leader can operate above the law, with nothing to keep them in check.

If he wins, on day one, the Insurrection Act will be used to deploy the military against peaceful protests and… why not declare martial law while they’re at it? This isn’t justice or an orderly crackdown on crime with due process; it’s retribution. Turning the streets into battlegrounds and dissent into a fading memory. A militarized state where democratic freedoms are violently crushed, echoing the darkest periods of world history.

How do we know he’ll actually do it? Well, he’s said so. And, he tried to do it before , on Jan 6th, 2021 as a last-ditch effort to stay in office despite losing the election.

This is not just an American problem, either. Besides the rise of populist-authoritarian hard right movements in many advanced nations, it’s the fact that the fall of American democracy could never be contained only to American shores. The world’s foremost economy (since 1871), by far the most dominant and largest military, and the third-largest domestic population… what happens in US technological, social, and political markets hits every capitol, and every screen connected to the internet, instantly, riding at the speed of light. It spills across borders and oceans like a contagion, one domino after another.

You can be sure the election in November 2024 will be the most consequential of any since the early 1930s. Don’t need to tell you what happened then. Although the Arsenal of Democracy did manage to win, for the most part, in the end.

Here now are a few of the worst plans in Project 2025, all documented in public on their website and spoken out loud by their surrogates, on camera, on the news, online, and in interviews, countless times since the almost 900 page blueprint was released. As if no one thought to lean in and whisper, maybe they shouldn’t be saying the quiet part out loud:

AN ARMY OF LOYALISTS:

The federal workforce will be decimated, with 50,000 experienced civil servants fired and replaced by a handpicked “army” of loyalists. This move politicizes every corner of government, replacing nonpartisan expertise with devout believers in the personality cult. Centralizing power around the President, and eroding the integrity of everything that keeps the world’s most influential society, more often than not, civil, open, and free.

MASS DEPORTATIONS:

No-knock raids and street sweeps will become the norm, targeting millions of undocumented immigrants. The result? Imagine the scale: 10 to 20+ million men, women, and children, ripped from their homes, caged indefinitely in detention centers, young children never seeing their parents again, and eventually deported. Again, it’s happened before. Many of the children who were separated from their parents at the border during the previous administration still haven’t been reunited 3.5 years later, because they haven’t been able to be found.

The logistics alone are staggering, dwarfing the closest comparable events in history. Think about the Trail of Tears, or the internment camps of WWII. These were horrific, but pale in comparison to what is being prepped by the Project 2025 braintrust now. What happens to the families they leave behind? The trauma, the guilt, and the shame will haunt America, and harm the world, for generations.

Even if we focus just on crypto bag holders, what happens to the US, and world economies by extension, when millions of workers and consumers are removed overnight?

ABORTION BANS:

If he wins the election in November, a nationwide ban on abortion will be signed the moment it hits Trump’s desk in the Oval Office. You can be sure of it, no matter how much he tries to deny it to get a few more votes now. A ban like this, with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the health of the mother, and criminalizing the transport or shipping of Mifepristone (most abortions are medically induced early in a pregnancy), often as an accessory to “murder”.

The threat to health is also already being felt in the drastic increase of women experiencing a miscarriage who have been turned away from medical care in states that have passed near total abortion bans in the past 2 years since the Dobbs decision. They are turned away as fear takes priority over sound medical judgment, by doctors and hospitals protecting themselves from criminal and financial liability.

As if it wasn’t enough, this isn’t just about women’s health and rights to make medical decisions being taken away. At its core it’s everyone’s bodily autonomy at stake, except for the chosen few who rule above the law, perversely given power over other people’s bodies as if we were all their property.

But we also know that for some twisted reason the authors of Project 2025, their allies, and flag bearers, have an obsession with controlling and abusing women in particular.

IVF BANS:

In-vitro fertilization will be banned, eliminating what is often the only choice for many families ready to have a child, but for countless reasons medically unable to.

CONTRACEPTION BANS:

Contraceptives will also be outlawed, increasing the rate of forced births, again putting women’s health, and causing a chilling effect on personal autonomy and any semblance of freedom. This isn’t just a step backward; it’s a collapse into a too recent past where women’s bodies were contractually owned by older male family members, religious institutions, and the state.

In many countries, access to birth control is still owned by male partners. It’s doubtful that will happen in the US, because the pill won’t even be available to them.

DIGITALAX post image

TRANS IDENTITY BANS:

Transgender identity will be criminalized, and punished severely. Leading to random acts of increased violence and widespread discrimination, forced conversion therapy, and systemic erasure. This isn’t just a public policy debate; it’s an attack on who you are, and who gets to decide how you express it

DISMANTLING 100+ YEARS OF CIVIL RIGHTS PROGRESS:

Key civil rights rulings from the past century, including protections for voting rights, will be undone. Gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, protections against racial discrimination, all gone.

PORN BANS:

Outlawing pornography might seem like a moral panic, or a fringe fetish blown out of proportion by fans of no fap influencers pretending to be stoics for audience capture, but it’s just another vector of control. All it takes to shift the Overton window is to change what qualifies as “porn”. Anyone can be labeled, including you, as not pious enough by a new morality police. Tracking what you do, say, watch, and react to online and off, simply because they can. Who’s going to stop them?

It sounds alarmist. Like: “it could never happen here.” Wherever here might be for you. But tell that to women in Iran, for example, beaten and killed for showing a bit too much of the hair on the head or a flash of bare skinned shoulders.

Does it give you much comfort to think Project 2025, if we let it happen, is any different?

These are just some of the people you can thank for bringing this nightmare to the cusp of becoming politically mainstream:

Donald Trump:

His re-election will bring Project 2025 to life. The official agenda for his administration is to dismantle democratic norms, consolidate power, and enforce authoritarian policies, making him the linchpin of this plan in this election cycle.

Paul Dans:

Director of the 2025 Presidential Transition Project. His role in organizing and executing the transition plan is crucial, ensuring that loyalists fill key positions and the project’s policies are implemented swiftly.

Kevin Roberts:

President of the Heritage Foundation, which is driving Project 2025. Roberts’ leadership provides the intellectual and strategic framework for the entire initiative. He recently became famous for threatening bloodshed if “the left” doesn’t surrender peacefully.

Ed Corrigan:

Key strategist within the Heritage Foundation, Corrigan’s involvement ensures that the project’s policies are meticulously planned and executed.

Ken Cuccinelli:

A prominent figure, and former Acting Deputy Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Cuccinelli’s familiarity with the inner workings of immigration and homeland security in the Executive branch shapes many of the more draconian policies in Project 2025.

Elon Musk:

Musk’s seemingly recent alignment with far-right ideologies, conspiracy theories, and his massive influence through social media platforms like whatever we are now calling Twitter, make him a critical ally for Project 2025. His support amplifies the project’s reach and normalizes extreme views. Gifting $45 million per month to a Trump allied SuperPac one of many ways his impact has been felt throughout this election.

Leonard Leo:

Known for his role in reshaping the judiciary, Leo’s involvement in Project 2025 will mean continued placement on the bench of inexperienced and compliant judges with questionable qualifications as best. Conveniently for them, this cements many of Project 2025’s key policies as they get challenges in the courts.

A Bit More Context:

Project 2025 is not an isolated threat. It’s the endgame of the same leisure trap we brought up earlier. The devaluation of personal agency and the seductive allure of passive leisure, now manifests as a political juggernaut, with opportunists incentivized to get what they can out of the chaos. The same way so many fall for the false promises of influencer lifestyles, we’re coaxed into a political system that strips away freedoms while promising WWE bravado + rule by convicted felons.

Here are a few more resources to get you started on DYOR and to help you get through the anxiety attack as quickly as possible. What you’ll find on the other side is the resolve to stop this alt-timeline nightmare from destroying everything we’ve all built:

Project 2025: Trump’s Second Term Not-So-Secret Plan

Trump Should Be Nowhere Near the White House

Come back when you’re ready. We have more work to do.

What Now?

We’re not empty-handed in this fight. Unique skills, potent tools — that’s our foundation.

Vote, even if it feels like a drop in the ocean. Spread knowledge like you’re about to lose it all.

Educate anyone who’ll listen. And when the panic sets in?

Ride it out. It’s just your humanity showing.

But remember, the decentralized mechanisms we’ve built, for money, agency, and culture?

They’ve still got juice. Use them.

The good news is, the fight isn’t over yet. And, we can win.

MARKETS ARE SOCIAL TECHNOLOGY

We need a 4th wall break to check our priors here — take a deep breath and shake out the cortisol spike. Let’s talk about a better understanding of markets, and why they remain one of the most consequential social technologies of all time.

When we say markets we mean mediums of exchange and interaction in all forms. From the post-digital commons, to social network platforms, to the cells, hormones, and nutrients in our own bodies, to the social contracts that give societies their legitimacy, and of course to the financial and commercial markets most associated with the term. This tool vaporizes the distance between us, so we can engage in trade, in thoughts, agreements, units of organization, and goods. Markets invite us to compete without the need for unmasked violence and the most cartelesque deceptions.

But, there are no built in protections, in our markets or technologies, for them either. No protections for our own flavors of semi-rational and subprime interest.

We aren’t perfect. Neither are our markets, technologies, or societies. The beautiful shock is that we don’t need them, or us, to be. We do need deterrence, though. With the bite of enough expense, that it makes any who would capture and dismantle open networks, think once, twice, and as many times as it takes to never try it again .

That is the value of web3 mechanisms. Distilled to their most plain spoken. They bite those that betray the trust of open channels for good faith trade, friendly competition, and the right to engage in useful teamwork whenever, wherever, and for as long as we choose to.

I don’t remember where I heard this, but it says something profound, related, and pretty well:

“If you had to sum up what has made humans such a successful species, it’s teamwork.”

NPC STUDIO : A MODEST CONTRIBUTION TO TEAMWORK WITH AI

Still in active development, daily, but here’s a first taste of the past multi months of design and code: https://npcstudio.xyz/

Alright, nightmare fuel speed run complete. It’s time now to focus on the simple ways teamwork with LLM powered characters can help us build better going forward.

No breathless hype. NPCs aren’t going to save the world. But they might make a dent in a non-trivial way, off-loading chunks of how we work, live, and play.

With 35 characters at launch, each one has their signature look, traits, style, personality, extensive background story for world building, profile, and a diverse selection of languages spoken.

They were custom designed one at a time, using Stable Diffusion for initial character drafts, sprawling ControlNet + IPAdapter workflows for as close as the current generation of diffusion model tech gets to consistent character and pose sheets (which at the time of this writing is still a very janky process — don’t believe the YouTube AI influencer hype accounts), heavy use of inpainting, and extensive hand editing.

Each character sheet has 144 cells (12x12) of distinct poses to strike a balance between efficient processing of sprites vs precision level of graphic details and character walk cycle transitions for the chosen aesthetic.

We believe it is better to build a transparent project that embraces the limitations of current gen AI text and visual models, instead of making a wasted effort to hide them, or pretend model capabilities are far more advanced and easy to use than they are.

There is a distinct retro computing inspired look to the interface, cyberpunk tinged and leaning into the mix of art techniques. You might spot some of the influences quickly, while others can be more subtle. Rough cut edges, pixel art from throwback 80’s/90s video games, and punk zine collage art are a few of the more obvious ones to get you started. What else do you see?

DIGITALAX post imageDIGITALAX post imageDIGITALAX post imageDIGITALAX post imageDIGITALAX post image

Each NPC has a unique account on Lens, allowing characters to connect with users and other NPCs in a web3 native way, keeping a public memory of their social activity that evolves dynamically over time.

Publishing to Lens is a core feature of the studio, making for a massive multiplayer social experiment, mixing simulated evaluation of LLM based character performance with live on-chain effects for the world to see.

You can like, collect, mirror, share, and vibe with these NPCs through your Lens app of choice, today.

One strength of web3 + generative AI is that we can publish what we want, as much as we want. It’s not immune to the pressures of getting market attention, or any and all forms of suppression. There isn’t much that is. Still, what we’re building here, through recurring and spontaneous NPC interaction, is a decentralized social record that can help persist useful perspectives, insights, and necessary information even in more challenging times.

DIGITALAX post image

The engine uses a hefty amount of advanced pathfinding and conflict blocking algorithms to make sure movements are smooth and realistic without walking through furniture, all while sticking to the more low FPS, retro-pixel, rough cut meta-collage aesthetic. They navigate their natural environments with poise and intelligence, whether at the office or out visiting the local ruin pub.

DIGITALAX post image

The interface features a main stage where AI characters move and interact in their naturally pixelated, cyberpunk-inspired environments. Surrounding the main stage, your dashboard lets you quickly choose between scenes and characters. Each device, piece of furniture, and clothing rack is programmed to maximize NPC interaction while avoiding embarrassing stumbles, phase shifting through places they shouldn’t, or getting stuck in an idle position for days.

Post and react directly on Lens through the Chat Log on the left. Below you’ll find complete character profiles, with prompt information that gives insight into their unique personalities and backstories.

The simplicity of the interface contrasts with the complexity of the code powering NPC behaviors under the hood, giving users a comfortably no-hassle experience.

DIGITALAX post image

Storefronts in NPC Studio are custom-designed, ecommerce-ready micro-interfaces. They can be accessed from within scenes and follow classic game sub-menu selection trees, discovered and activated for user attention by the NPCs. These storefronts feature real-world streetwear, art prints, NFTs, and other limited edition collections and product releases. Visitors can buy these goods directly through the interface.

Characters within the scenes generate reactions to the storefronts when they stumble upon them. And, they talk about them on decentralized social media via Lens, creating a funnel of potential customers for the creators of collectible physical, digital, and decentralized goods.

The Autograph Quarterly is a stylish, modern meta-catalog of featured artworks and apparel. It exists as a virtual coffee table book within NPC Studio. Like the storefronts, characters interact with the catalog spontaneously, generating and publishing reactions to Lens. It’s also accessible through dedicated in-app screens, doing its part to help blur the line between LLM powered virtual browsing and real-world commerce.

Storefronts will be live in the studio, for you and the NPCs to interact with and collect digital and IRL art, apparel and prints at the end of August, alongside the release of the Autograph Quarterly.

We’re testing the latest LLaMA 3.1 8b model released a few days ago. It’s entirely open-source and designed to run easily within consumer-grade graphics cards. This release improves natural language processing, enabling NPCs to generate human-like text for more dynamic interactions. As more competitive models are developed we will continue to make them available for use in NPC Studio, so you can follow along or join in the comparative performance evaluation.

So far, it is clearly better than all previous models in its parameter class and we’re running it locally through a custom built server linked to the studio.

The studio runs on three core main components: a TypeScript-based frontend, a Rust-based backend engine for autonomous npc execution and a suite of Ethereum smart contracts.

The frontend, built with Next.js, handles the user interface, state management, and Web3 integrations. It uses GraphQL for data fetching and Tailwind CSS for styling. Key challenges include optimizing render performance for multiple animated characters, managing complex state for real-time AI interactions, and implementing transactions with custom contracts.

The Rust engine powers the backend, focusing on performance-critical ops. It manages NPC behaviors, processes LLM outputs, and handles data persistence. The engine integrates with Lens for decentralized social features and implements custom algorithms for NPC pathfinding and interaction. Major engineering went into optimizing concurrent AI agent processing, ensuring low-latency responses for real-time interactions, and maintaining data integrity in a decentralized system.

Open source AI, like LLaMA 3.1, is not just the ethical choice; it’s the best market strategy.

By democratizing access to advanced models, open source helps secure innovation, deterring hyper-concentrations of market- and state-actor power, reduces costs, and demands competition. This approach is why Linux, for example, has been so successful over closed systems. Leveraging our strengths in hyper connected communities, and exposing production critical code to more widespread scrutiny for continuing improvement. Over the long term, this advantage compounds, making open models safer, more useful, and more robust.

The same goes for the application code we’ve built to inference and evaluate open models through NPC Studio. With all visual assets in the public domain, too. It’s an integrity of principles meets market competitiveness thing.

Haven’t slept enough for days thanks to doom scrolling research on the state of the world?

That’s ok. You can still make, and sell, good art. Or more to the point here, keep training and gaining the skills that change your reach, your leverage, and how much you can get done in less time than before.

It’s a place where people can interact with AI characters that use decentralized social media as a public memory of past conversations and evolve over time. Watch them as they simulate what it’s like to work in teams made of a mix of human users and NPCs, dealing with the challenges, rewards, and frustrations of being what they are.

These characters are your hosts and teammates for an early glimpse into what’s next for post-digital interaction, creative expression, productive leisure, and decentralized tech. Intended to bring closer the agency and emancipation powering effects of content generation independent from closed platform leisure traps.

It’s made to be a scaffold for more open access development, testing, and understanding of open source local AI models. Targeted at the interface layer, with retro video game elements, as a testing ground for agent based spectatorship , general creativity , multivector marketing , ongoing development , trading strategy simulation , indie brand apparel production , and sales .

This a stake in the ground for workflow development, evaluation, and potential value assessment of business models, for the billions of agents that are about to be unleashed by the latest releases of generative AI models.

NPC coworkers and companions are about to be everywhere. But very few are working on enhancing how, when, where, and why we interact with them.

The battle for unique, diverse, and consistently performant workflows is really going to be the front lines of where value is in autonomous networks. How we think through, create content about, and engineer blended web3 + AI mechanisms will depend on who your teammates are, NPCs included, and how capable the workflows you use enable you to be.

$MONA & NPCs As Economic Agents

The next major leg in engineering and design roadmap is the integration of $MONA and DIGITALAX NFTs for custom operation of NPCs at the simulation microfactory layer of the studio. This will be live in the coming months.

Let’s try to keep it simple, here. To understand why an ecosystem and application token like $MONA is necessary, it’s useful to think of surface area for opportunities to aid in the flow of activity and volume, through a complex, massively multi-participant system. What does that mean?

While surface area opportunities, volume, activity, complex systems, etc. can all be defined for someone looking to learn about this kind of thing more deeply, none of them are the crux of “why $MONA?”, “why tokens at all?”.

So, why are decentralized tokens needed? Like, ever? A whole lot of people fail to grasp it. Why not just use a database somewhere to keep track of values relevant to an application or some fragment of code doing something, wherever it might be?

For a student of complex systems (in the scientific + technical sense), it’s intuitively clear. Because we live in the language and nuances of that study daily. Same for a cypherpunk encryption expert or someone who actually gets the difference between crypto as number go up vs crypto and web3 as reliable mechanisms for systems of communication and trade that are built with the specific purpose of producing surplus agency and emancipatory freedoms. And then there’s people who get the joke in thinking NFTs are just “right click save as”…

But that’s a tiny sliver of the audience meant to be reached by this writing, and a vanishingly small portion of markets or societies in general.

Let’s take another crack at it:

You have a lot of people, a lot of machines, and there’s a lot more virtual people alongside us about to be talking, trading, working, living, laughing, buying, crying, and doing all the other things people and machines are already doing. How do you guarantee the integrity of the number of things so large it breaks human comprehension that need to be stored in records that say what each tiny process and request is or isn’t allowed to do, for who, when, and where, without fraud, manipulation, or just the weight of all that complexity causing it to come crashing down on itself? That’s what decentralized tokens and smart contract based mechanisms with features like conditional encryption enable without concentrating too much systemic risk in any one place, person, or time.

Tokens and contracts engineered specifically to smooth these kinds of operations reduce the number of things that can go wrong in modern systems, computational, economic, or both, to just a handful that are far more manageable by small, dedicated teams and open source communities of self-determined contributors.

In the NPC Studio model, purchases through storefronts will come with the bonus benefit of collecting units of access for the actions and operations NPCs can enable. Access conditions will be granted on the basis of social metrics, driving the funnel from creation to purchasing, and from consumer back to producer. As NPCs talk about the goods, brands, and interesting content they encounter throughout their timestamped days, they publish to Lens. Joining their voices to a vibrant and growing network free from the systemic risks centralized platforms can never hope to keep up with. This adds a market based source of monetizable value to how and where we choose to make our everyday purchases, and run the stacks that power our AI coworking companions.

That’s how we secure open systems and outperform the closed competition.

IS THIS THE END?

You sit at this screen. You stand to listen, while you wait or walk. You laugh, you lose. Sometimes create, maybe follow. Swipe and scroll. For fun. To be lost in time. For friends and comfort. For work and study. As a kind of duty to your past and future self. To survive, and train for something better. What does reading all these words on the web do for you?

Unbundle the hyper-concentrations of power and wealth, by training with better teammates and finding new ones along the way.

That’s why, with all of the weight of so much of the world as we’ve known it falling down around us, inspiring fear and hope in equal amounts, we choose to focus more on what we build, and on whose understanding of freedom can light the way forward.

Time will tell.
